Special Series: The Impact of Fear on the Arab-Israeli Conflict - 2009
by Simon Lawson
In the second article in the series about the impact of fear on the Arab-Israeli conflict, Simon Lawson examines the fear of the ‘other’ that has taken hold in Israeli and Palestinian societies, particularly since the first Intifada. It is a fear fuelled by ignorance of the other side which will not relent so long as the “barriers continue to be built and reinforced”. Lawson praises efforts to dispel the ignorance which he says are crucial if we are to achieve a sustainable solution.

by Roi Ben-Yehuda
In the third article in CGNews’ special series on the impact of fear on the Arab-Israeli conflict, Israeli writer Roi Ben-Yehuda explores the emotion of fear of the friend. Less well known than fear of the other, fear of the friend can be equally problematic and harmful to peacemaking. Ben-Yehuda explains why this is so and what are the ways in which we can respond to and mitigate this fear.

by Barbara Landau and Dr. George Awad
In the fourth article in the special series on the impact of fear on the Arab-Israeli conflict, we hear the perspective of the late Palestinian psychiatrist, Dr. George Awad, presented by his Jewish colleague and friend, Dr. Barbara Landau. Awad and Landau were both members of a Palestinian-Jewish dialogue group for mental health professionals and the topic of fear was a central theme in their discussions.

by Saliba Sarsar and Hiyam Zakharia Sarsar
In the fifth article in CGNews’ special series on the impact of fear on the Arab-Israeli relationship, Saliba and Hiyam Zakharia Sarsar describe their youth in Jerusalem in the shadow of the conflict. They talk about how fear and anxiety became an integral part of their life and the lives of all Palestinians and Jews in the country. Fear cannot be mitigated by force, they say. Instead, “Israelis and Palestinians need more social workers and therapists…less bereavement and more reconciliation”.

by Jona Bargur
In the final article in CGNews’ special series on the impact of fear on the Arab-Israeli conflict, Dr. Jona Bargur makes the case for fear. Fear is everywhere. But, argues Bargur, the answer is not to repress and conquer it. If we listen to fear it can help us make saner decisions about what’s good for our future. Accepting our fear is acknowledging our right to live.

"I like the articles you distribute because they're not always safe. They move the discussion forward, they're not reiterative. They help me think in new ways about problems that really need solutions, problems that are not simple but complex."
